If your child’s behavior or mood suddenly shifts overnight—intense anxiety, obsessive thoughts, meltdowns, or tics—it’s not just confusing, it’s heartbreaking. For many parents, these changes aren’t “just a phase” but a sign of something deeper: PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) or PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections).
As a functional wellness practitioner specializing in children’s chronic illnesses and autoimmune conditions, I’ve seen firsthand how life-changing these disorders can be—and how transformative healing becomes when we address the root cause.

What are PANS and PANDAS?
Both PANS and PANDAS are autoimmune conditions that cause sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms in children.
PANDAS is specifically linked to a streptococcal infection (like strep throat).
PANS can be triggered by a wider range of factors, including other infections, environmental toxins, or chronic inflammation.
Common Symptoms Include:
Intense anxiety or panic attacks, rage
Obsessive-compulsive behaviors
Tics or involuntary movements
Sudden irritability or aggression
Mood swings or emotional outbursts
Sleep disturbances
Decline in school performance
Regression in developmental milestones
The Root Cause
In both conditions, the immune system’s response to a trigger goes off track, mistakenly attacking the brain. This autoimmune reaction leads to inflammation, disrupting brain function and creating the symptoms you see in your child.
A Functional Wellness Approach to Healing PANS & PANDAS
At Friend Functional Wellness, we take a whole-child approach—looking at their immune system, gut health, environment, and emotional well-being to uncover the root causes and create a personalized plan for healing.
1. Comprehensive Health Evaluation
We start with a deep dive into your child’s health:
Immune function
Gut health
Nutritional status
Environmental triggers (like mold, toxins, or allergens)
2. Supporting the Immune System
We address the imbalances driving the immune system’s overreaction. This may include:
Targeted nutrition
Immune-supportive supplements
Gentle detoxification strategies
3. Restoring Gut Health
The gut-brain connection is critical in PANS and PANDAS. Poor gut health can worsen neuropsychiatric symptoms. Healing the gut often helps calm brain inflammation.
4. Optimizing Nutrition
An anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich diet supports both immune health and brain function. We identify and remove food triggers while focusing on foods that nourish and heal.
5. Reducing Environmental Triggers
Environmental factors like mold, heavy metals, and chemical exposures can aggravate symptoms. We work to identify and address these triggers.
6. Emotional & Family Support
PANS and PANDAS don’t just affect the child—they impact the entire family. We provide:
Emotional support for parents and siblings
Practical coping strategies
Resources to help families navigate this journey together
Hope for Families Facing PANS and PANDAS
While these conditions can feel overwhelming, there is hope. By addressing the root causes—not just the symptoms—we can help children regain balance in their bodies and brains. Healing takes time, but with the right plan, many children experience significant improvement and even full recovery.
At Friend Functional Wellness, I work alongside parents to create personalized care plans that support their child’s unique needs. You don’t have to navigate this alone—there’s a path forward.
